Lance Vaughn Employee Spotlight

by Trava, Cyber Risk Management

Meet Lance!

I'm an account executive here at Trava.

In your words, what is your role at Trava.

It's officially called business development, but I like to think of it as more of customer development and a large part of what we do is to discover more about the value that we bring to the market and what shortcomings, if any, might exist in that value proposition that we might consider addressing as a company. Another way of saying it is we're sort of like the eyes and ears of the company while we're out having conversations in the marketplace.

Describe Trava in 3 words.

I came up with, I think, an award winner here, securing our world.

Where is your happy place?

I would say it's at home. So my wife and I are parents of three boys, ages 10, 13, and 15. And I have to say parenting is the hardest thing I've ever done, and there's a lot of self-doubt, at least for me, that comes along with it. So when I hear laughter in my house, it just really strums the strings of my heart in a way that nothing has ever done in this world, or nothing in this world could ever do. It's sort of like my heaven on earth.

If you could give your 13-year-old self advice, what would it be?

At the age of 13, I was already designing and developing my own video games. Because back then, if you wanted to play a video game, you were pretty much going to have to build it yourself. So I would probably advise the 13-year-old version of me to think bigger, because back then, pre-internet, more or less, it was just one person playing a game. And I would go back and advise myself to try to think of how you could build something that you could play with your friend who's at their house over a phone line. And I just think that a little bit of advice could have sparked my imagination in big ways.

What is your favorite motivational quote?

I was going to say the Serenity Prayer, which is obviously wonderful, but I thought of another one. I think it's the author of the book The Alchemist, which believe it or not, I haven't read, but this quote is

"When we strive to become better people, everyone around us becomes better too."

What has been your favorite project at Trava?

I have been in a couple of small micro-projects, and one of them was building a RACI chart for the services team. So RACI is Responsibility, Accountability, Consultant and Inform and that was really fun for me because I was able to leverage my consulting background and bring clarity to the team.

Cats or dogs?

Definitely dogs, and I'm trying to figure out why. It's a great question. I feel like in my experience, dogs have a stronger bond with their owners, more like true companions.

What’s your favorite color?

I think purple.
